Castries is the most populated district in Saint Lucia. It is home to a number of populated areas including the Capital of Castries. The geographical area was home to a large volcano which collapsed in on itself, giving the area a bit of a bowl like topography, and giving the bay extremely deep depths, which allows the Cruise ships to dock. You can also find Marigot Bay at the south part of Castries, a small well known bay that shelters ships during storms. It is home to many celebrities because of its serenity and world class views. Other notable areas in Castries include Morne Fortune, known for its pictureque views and rich history, as well as Cul De Sac, a central area to the island with great road access that is perfect for industrial, commercial, and agricultural ventures.
History:
Castries was founded in 1650 by the French, who named the town “Carénage”, or “Safe Anchorage” for its deep waters.
