Soufriere, French for “Sulfur in the air”, was the name given to the main village in the district. The village of Soufriere was once the capital of St Lucia before Castries. The name was given to the district due to the close proximity to the volcano. This close proximity to the volcano has created a number of amazing tourist attractions for the island, which has also brought lots of well known hotels to the area. Attractions include the Pitons, the volcano mud baths, Diamond Falls, the Tet Paul Nature Trail, and Jalousie Beach, also known as Sugar Beach. Soufriere is located in the southern part of the island, but due to the terrain of the island in that area, it will take you roughly 45min to 1hr to get there from the Airport via the highway. Don’t fret though, the scenic drive along the coastline will leave you breathless the whole way.
